My Morning Routine
Let’s talk about morning routines. Up until about a few months ago, my morning routine consisted of my alarm going off, me snoozing a little and then automatically checking and browsing through Instagram, in other words, I didn’t have a morning routine.
The more wellness podcasts I listen to or ones by motivational speakers and successful speakers, I learn that they all have a morning routine. I started mine about a few months ago now and I can honestly say it makes such a difference in my day. I feel happier, more clear-minded and grounded if I had to describe the outcome. So what is my morning routine?
I am currently writing this as we are all dealing with Covid-19 aka quaratined so I’ll tell you guys the two versions (pre and during quaratine), they are very similar but I obviously have more time now so my routine has grown.
Pre-Quaratine Routine
Set an alarm for 5:45 and snooze for a few minutes and get up around 6am.
Next I would meditate for about 5-10 minutes.
Meditation does not come easily to me. I remember my mom would do it while I was growing up and I never wanted to. Even now I find that my thoughts wander. But start small like with 5 minutes and also I recommend doing guided ones through the Peloton App or another app like Headspace. Meditation can also be just taking a few deep breaths and saying what you are grateful for. It can honestly be whatever you want it to be, whatever calms you.
Then I would make hot water, lemon and cinnamon and drink it as a I was getting ready. I would also make a celery juice or a healthy smoothie like this turmeric one to have at work later. The goal would be to get out of my apartment by 6:45 in order to take the train to my gym to go swimming. If I wasn’t going swimming then I would do an at-home workout and then do my hair/makeup.
During Quarantine Routine
I’ll be honest, I’m not waking up at 5:45 right now, especially since I am furloughed and don’t have to log on to work from home. I am though still setting an alarm. Your girl can sleep but I also love mornings and I love my routine.
When my furlough first started, I was setting my alarm for around 8:30 am and snoozing for half hour. Now I am setting an alarm for 7:30 and trying to be up and moving before 8am. I’m not going to sit here and lie, it’s not always easy. But what gets me moving is knowing how good I feel once I just leave my bed.
The rest of the routine is pretty much the same except I will meditate longer and I’ve taken up to saying chants as well. I found this great link (here!) that I like to read through and pick ones that speak to me. Then I will either do yoga or an at home workout- I’ll pick something from my list here. I like working out in the morning because you burn the most fat on an empty stomach and it gets you energized for the day!
Something I want to work on which is really difficult for me is not looking at my phone 30 minutes or an hour before bed and after waking up. I think the problem with this is that it is my alarm clock. I just heard Ed Mylett saying on The Skinny Confidential Podcast how doing this was life changing for him and it is definitely on my list of things I am working on!
