Goji Berries and their Benefits
I talked about superfoods here and mentioned goji berries as one of them. Well I decided that goji berries and their benefits need a whole post all to themselves! These little forces of nature are so packed with benefits that even I was surprised. Then again, we know that the earth supplies us with all that we need, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, right?
Physical Health Benefits
Let’s start with the benefits as they relate to our physical health- and the list is long. Goji berries are said to help with eye sight, the immune system, cholesterol levels, healthy skin, and even stabilizing blood sugar levels. In terms of prevention they can help prevent liver damage and cancer growth.
These powerful berries are also known as powerful antioxidants and can give us energy and even help us lose weight. Who knew such a small fruit can be packed with so much goodness!
Holistic Health Benefits
As a Health Coach you know that I am looking at your life holistically- so not just physical health benefits but also your sleep, career, relationships with people, and other aspects of your life. Superfoods like goji berries are great not only for your body but for your mind and soul as well. In order to supercharge your mind, you need to look at all areas.
Goji berries have been linked to helping with depression, anxiety and sleep. This can help with the way that we approach anything in life including what we eat but also how we act toward others. Helping you realize that everything is connected is part of my work as a Health Coach.
How to Eat Goji Berries
If you’ve never tried them before, let me try and explain what they taste like- I would say they are a little bit sweet and a little bit bitter. You can eat goji berries raw, which I like to do, or you can blend them in with your smoothie.
How Much Do I Eat a Day?
You can find them at health food stores, Home Goods or Whole Foods. At the Whole Foods by me they are $19.99 per lb which sounds like a lot but you get a lot of berries for your buck. The other day I purchased 0.4 lbs and they lasted me over a week. You only need to eat about a tablespoon a day.
Let’s also remember that if you are going to incorporate superfoods into your diet that you are leading a healthy lifestyle. Goji berries and other superfoods are not bandaids or miracle solvers. These work if you help them to work.
