What to Expect with a Colonic
I recently went for a colonic and thought that talking about my experience and what to expect with a colonic might be helpful for someone looking to learn about it. This was my second colonic and I know when I was deciding if I wanted to go for my first one I was googling blogs, articles and videos to feel more comfortable. So I hope this helps you and please remember that everyone’s experience will be different and this is just what happened to me/how I felt.
What is a colonic?
First, let’s start with what a colonic is. No, this isn’t a surgery or something that you need to go to a doctor for. A lot of people get it confused with a colonoscopy.
A colonic aka a colon cleansing or colon hydrotherapy is used to flush out your colon and intestinal tract. Our large intestine is 5 feet long and our small intestine is 20 feet long!! Imagine how many twists and turns they must have to fit within our bodies! It’s no wonder food that goes through it gets stuck in there and never comes out! This is what a colonic can help with- removing years of digested food that never made it out.
I found the below explanation of a colonic and couldn’t have explained it better myself-
Warm filtered water is introduced into your colon through a small tube called a speculum that is gently inserted about an inch and a half into your rectum. As the warm water enters, you’ll feel a fullness as your colon fills up, then a relaxing feeling as it empties. The water pressure and temperature are carefully controlled and all waste is drained away discreetly in a closed system with absolutely no mess or odours.
This filling and emptying is repeated several times and massage is applied to your abdomen. Unlike an enema, colonic hydrotherapy reaches the whole length of your large intestine, with the massage from your therapist helping to ensure you benefit from an effective cleanse. Source linked here.
What Does a Colonic Feel Like?
The above explanation makes the whole process sound very calming and relaxing. My experience? It starts off that way but personally for me it isn’t toward the end.
So here is what to expect with a colonic- First of all when the water starts to enter your colon, it is definitely a weird feeling. The first time I did it I started panicking a little, the second time was better because I knew it was coming. It’s just a strange feeling, not necessarily uncomfortable but unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. Your belly area (technically your intestines) swells up and gives you a pregnant looking round belly.
Once the therapist starts releasing the water out and massaging your stomach you feel a relief. Here’s kind of the nasty part but something no one told me and I wish I had known. When the old waste starts coming out, it can be a little uncomfortable. You feel pressure and then it sort of feels like you have diarrhea. There I said it. You do have the tube inserted so the waste only comes out through there but you almost feel like you’re about to shit the table. Just remember that you won’t!
Once the therapist wraps up and most of your waste comes out you will be sent to the bathroom to let the water and some waste work it’s way out. Tip- sit there a few minutes (around 5 min) until you are sure it is ALL out! You do not want any accidents on the way home.
After The Colonic
After you have the colonic you should expect to feel a little bloated since your body soaked up some of that water. The system the technician is (and should be) using uses filtered water so no worries about that. A lot of people say they feel super light after as well. Personally I haven’t experienced this even though I feel like I should. It’s honestly shocking how much waste comes out, even if you use the bathroom very regularly, you will need more than one session.
Do I love doing colonics? Honestly, no. But would I go back? Yes. I see for myself how much old waste is stuck in my body and I definitely don’t want that in there. After doing a colonic I also like to restore my gut with good bacteria and take a pre/probiotic. My favorite is from Nue Co.
Something else that I learned is that I have a lot of gas in my intestinal tract which causes bloating and that I don’t chew my food enough! The chewing food is something I am trying so hard to work on but it’s hard! I’m a fast eater lol.
I hope this helped you if you are thinking about getting a colonic. Feel free to message me privately if you have any more questions and as always, please speak to your doctor before doing any sort of health procedure!
